How to Make Butter

Making butter is a simple process that can provide many benefits. To make butter, start by whipping heavy cream until it turns into solid chunks of butter submerged in buttermilk. Drain the buttermilk and wash the butter to remove any remaining liquid. Butter can add flavor and richness to foods, provide essential fats and vitamins, and act as a binder or emulsifier in baked goods.

  • Fresh cream or milk
  • Mixer or jar with a tight lid
  • Metal strainer or cheesecloth

How to Make Butter

  1. Pour the cream into your mixer or jar.
  2. If using a jar, tighten the lid securely. Start mixing or shaking vigorously.
  3. As you continue, the cream will thicken and eventually separate into butter and buttermilk.
  4. This process can take anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes, depending on your method and tools.
  5. Once the butter has formed, strain out the buttermilk and rinse the butter under cold water to remove any remaining liquid.
  6. If desired, then shape the butter into a block or any desired form. Your homemade butter is now ready.
  7. You can do this with any milk, goat, cow, or camel, milk is milk.
